I’m pretty late in writing this post but better late than never I’d say!
Looking at it on a first impression, it seems pretty obvious to anyone that Boston Dynamic’s Atlas robot simply takes the cake here1. But we should definitely take a step back and look at the entire picture of what we’re dealing with.
The Atlas Robot:
- Has been in development since July 2013
- Given that the ‘Spot’ brand of robots is going for around $75,000 a unit2, I think it would be a safe bet to wage that an Atlas unit is much more costly.
The Tesla Optimus:
- Has been in development since August 2021 when it was announced
- Is predicted to be around $20,000 a unit within three to five years
Honestly, considering just these basic facts alone, Optimus seems to be on the trajectory for becoming a mass-produced model sooner or later. Atlas can probably be thought of a premium model (that is, if it ever becomes commercially available to the masses rather than to a select few industries & groups). Knowing all of this makes it just a bit harder to be able to compare these two different products, only time will tell how this all ends.
On another note, is it just me or would anyone else like to see Optimus & Atlas participate in battle bots?
